In the limelight

Before electric stage lighting, theaters in the early 19th century used cylinders of quicklime (calcium oxide) heated by an oxyhydrogen flame to produce a brilliant white light. This "limelight" was directed at performers to make them stand out. Being "in the limelight" came to mean being the center of public attention.
