By and large

This nautical term meaning "on the whole" or "generally speaking" comes from sailing. "By" means sailing into the wind, while "large" means sailing with the wind. A ship that performed well "by and large" — in both conditions — was considered a good vessel overall. The phrase entered general English by the 17th century.
