Dead ringer

This phrase for an exact duplicate does not come from premature burials as urban legend suggests. Instead, it originates from horse racing in the late 19th century, where a "ringer" was a horse secretly substituted for another in a race. "Dead" was slang for "exact" or "precise," so a dead ringer was a perfect lookalike.
