Devil's advocate

This term for someone who argues an opposing position originated in the Catholic Church. During canonization proceedings, a church official called the "Advocatus Diaboli" was appointed to argue against sainthood by finding flaws in the candidate's character. The role was formally established by Pope Sixtus V in 1587 and abolished in 1983.
