Flash in the pan

This phrase for a brief, promising start that leads to nothing comes from flintlock firearms. Occasionally, the gunpowder in the pan would ignite with a flash but fail to fire the main charge — a frustrating misfire. By the early 19th century, it described any person or thing that shows initial promise but ultimately disappoints.
