Read the riot act

This phrase for sternly warning someone to behave comes from an actual British law. The Riot Act of 1714 required authorities to read a specific proclamation ordering crowds to disperse. Anyone who remained assembled one hour after the reading was guilty of a felony. The act remained in force until 1973.
