On tenterhooks

This phrase describing anxious suspense comes from the textile industry. After cloth was woven, it was stretched on wooden frames called "tenters" using hooks to prevent shrinkage as it dried. Being "on tenterhooks" evoked the image of being stretched tight with tension. The phrase has been in use since the mid-18th century.
