Beat around the bush

In medieval hunting, beaters were hired to thrash bushes and flush out game birds for wealthy hunters. The beaters did the preliminary work around the bush without actually catching anything — they left the real action to others. The phrase came to mean avoiding the main topic or being indirect in conversation.
