Paint the town red

One popular origin story attributes this phrase to the Marquis of Waterford, who in 1837 went on a drunken rampage through the English town of Melton Mowbray, literally painting buildings, a tollgate, and a swan statue with red paint. Whether true or apocryphal, by the 1880s the expression meant going out for a wild, uninhibited celebration.
