Sleep tight

Before box springs, beds used ropes woven through the frame to support the mattress. These ropes needed regular tightening to prevent sagging, hence the bedtime wish to "sleep tight." A special wrench-like tool was used to twist the ropes taut, and a well-tightened bed made for a far more comfortable night's sleep.
