Bury the hatchet

This expression meaning to make peace comes from a Native American custom. When warring tribes negotiated a truce, chiefs would literally bury their tomahawks, hatchets, and other weapons in the ground as a symbolic gesture of peace. The practice was recorded by European colonists as early as the 1680s.
