Phrase Origin

Pass the buck

In frontier poker games, a buckhorn-handled knife (the "buck") was placed in front of the player whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not want to deal, they would pass the buck to the next person. President Harry Truman famously reversed the phrase with his desk sign reading "The Buck Stops Here."
