Diehard

At the Battle of Albuera in 1811 during the Peninsular War, Colonel William Inglis of the 57th Regiment of Foot lay wounded on the battlefield, repeatedly urging his men to "Die hard, 57th, die hard!" The regiment held their ground despite devastating casualties, and "diehard" became a term for someone who refuses to give up.
