Phrase Origin

Steal someone's thunder

Playwright John Dennis invented a new method of simulating thunder for his 1709 play "Appius and Virginia," which was a commercial failure. Shortly after, he heard his thunder technique being used in a production of "Macbeth" at the same theater. Dennis reportedly exclaimed, "They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder!" giving birth to the idiom.
