Three sheets to the wind

This nautical phrase describing someone who is very drunk refers to the ropes (called sheets) that control a sail. If three sheets were loose and flapping in the wind, the sail would be uncontrolled and the ship would stagger erratically across the water — much like an intoxicated person stumbling about.
