Scapegoat

This term for someone blamed for others' misdeeds comes from an ancient Hebrew ritual described in the Book of Leviticus. On the Day of Atonement, a priest would symbolically transfer the sins of the community onto a goat, which was then driven into the wilderness. William Tyndale coined the English word in his 1530 Bible translation.
