Turn a blind eye

This phrase is famously attributed to Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. When signaled by his superior to withdraw, Nelson reportedly held his telescope to his blind eye and said, "I really do not see the signal." He continued fighting and won the battle, and the phrase came to mean deliberately ignoring something.
