Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

A horse's age and health can be assessed by examining its teeth. This proverb, meaning don't be ungrateful or overly critical of a gift, dates back to at least the 4th century in the writings of St. Jerome. It warns against the rudeness of scrutinizing the value of something given freely.
